SoloStudioLA Furniture

SoloStudioLA is a custom furniture line created by Los Angeles–based designer Sarah Luhtala.

Blending art, architecture, and a playful sensibility, Luhtala approaches each project with a multidisciplinary eye. Every piece is made-to-order and entirely unique, featuring original artwork printed on laminate sheets. These graphics aren't simply surface decoration—they actively shape the form, scale, and character of the furniture itself.

The studio's name is a tribute to Superstudio, the radical Italian architecture collective of the late 1960s and '70s. Although Superstudio realized few built works, its witty collages and speculative projects—circulated through magazines and exhibitions—expanded ideas of what architecture and urbanism could be.

One of their most recognizable motifs was the grid, a critique of postwar modernism's obsession with pure function. In addition, Luhtala pulls inspiration from tile work and mosaics, reinterpreting these standard patterns from background to structure, from surface to form. In her work, function and design are inseparable—the pattern doesn't just fit to its surroundings; it becomes the object.
